Pilates classes focus on strength, muscle toning, body control, and flexibility, with the main emphasis being core strength.
Yoga improves flexibility, balance and strength, in addition to the possibility of going upside down in inversions or arm balances. Both practices focus on breath, alignment, balance, strength and flexibility.
Yoga is also more of a mental workout and Pilates more physical.
Both practices are extremely complementary and many people choose to do both, enjoying the benefits of a long lean body and a clear mind free from stress.
Strengthening your core in Pilates will give you better balance in yoga; while increasing your flexibility in yoga will enable you to go deeper in Pilates. Get too flexible without the strength to support it and you might get injured; develop a lot of strength without taking the time to stretch, and you’ll also set yourself up for problems. Where Pilates draws in, yoga opens up, it’s a balance.
